Welcome friends to Preach It Girl podcast, a place where we aren't just sitting around waiting for Jesus's second coming or skinny pop to make us skinny. I mean, those things are bound to happen, but while we wait, join me Auntie Lala for a jaunt through the scriptures so lively you'll think they were written just yesterday, not 2000 years ago. Now put on your listening ears for a somewhat sassy retelling of stories from the Bible. Y'all, there are some seriously sassy women in the Bible, and I can't wait for you to hear their stories. You might be wondering who I am. Well shucks, I'm a sassy woman just like you, who loves Jesus and has finally come to the conclusion that Jesus loves women, and dare I say, especially the sassy ones. Today we're going to hear a story from the sassy woman of Samaria, and let me tell you, she does not disappoint. We're going to go to John chapter four and let me just preface this. Jesus and the disciples are making their way to Jerusalem and they have to pass through the land of Samaria. The Jews and the Samaritans did not get along. The Samaritans only believe like the first few books of the Bible of Moses, the law, and didn't have all the prophets. There was just a whole thing between them. And actually, there's a few stories in the Bible, and this is just one of them that gives you a taste of really the kind of person Jesus is We're going to go to John 4, 4 31. And he had to pass through Samaria. So he came to a town called Sincar, near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob's well was there, so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour. A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, Give me a drink. For his disciples had gone away from the city to buy food. The Samaritan woman said to him, How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from a woman of Samaria? For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. here's this woman at the sixth hour. The middle of the day. It's hot. She's tired.. She's coming to the well to get water, which she has to do every day. Generally, it would be expected that she'd go in the morning and it'd be a group of women that would come together. Well, she's all alone. So that says something about her. She sees this man, who I think she thinks, You know what? Who does he think he is? He's sitting here asking me for a drink like I don't know he's Jewish and that he's not really supposed to be talking to me. And honestly, I'm tired as all get out and hot. And I don't have time for him. Jesus replied, if you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me and I would give you living water. Now, at this point, I think she's sizing him up with a good, up and down look. You know what I mean? he doesn't have a bucket. I think she's thinking he's maybe having a heat stroke, but sir, you don't have a rope or a bucket. And this well is very deep. Where would you get this living water? And besides, do you think you're greater than our ancestor Jacob? And Who gave us this? Well, how can you offer better water than he and his sons and his animals enjoyed? I think Jesus kind of smiled. Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. He said, but those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life. Oh, I think she thought, okay, well shoot if that's what you got, I want some of that. She said, sir, give me this water. Then I'll never be thirsty again. I won't have to come here and get water. I think she's being sarcastic right here. Oh yeah. Give me some of that because, uh, You know, it'd be nice not to have to truck out here every day with my bucket in the middle of the day in the heat of the sun, tired as I am, running a whole household. Jesus says, Go and get your husband. I kind of see her little hand on her hip. Well, I don't have one. Jesus said, You're right. You don't have a husband for you have had five husbands and you aren't even married to the man you're living with now. This is where I think a lot of preachers Maybe get this wrong she was. Out there sinning floozy and Jesus pointed it out and that changed her Well, it's not been too many times that somebody's pointed a finger at me and Talked about all the things i've done wrong that changed me And actually god's word says it's his kindness that brings us to repentance let's just take a look at the culture. Why don't we? back in that day, the women had no power. They were considered property and cattle, I don't know if they were above the cattle or below the cattle, but they, they was close to the cattle. They couldn't divorce a man, but a man could divorce a woman for not giving him kids, for all kinds of things, maybe for being sassy. I don't know. Maybe she was a little combative or argumentative. I mean, she's definitely arguing with Jesus here, but you know what? I don't think Jesus is offended at all. And he has a gift for her and he wants to give it to her. He points out that she has been looked over and rejected pushed aside and forgotten in her community. He recognizes that. She responds, you must be a prophet. Tell me, why is it that the Jews insist that Jerusalem is the only place of worship? While we Samaritans claim it is here at Mount Gerizim where our ancestors worshiped. Isn't that funny? She's heard these things and she really wants to know the truth. Jesus replied, believe me, dear woman, the time is coming when it will no longer matter whether you worship the father on this mountain or that mountain. The Samaritans know very little about the one that we worship while the Jews, the salvation is from the Jews. But the time has come and indeed it is now my sister. When true worshipers and the father is looking for those who will worship him that For God is spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth. The woman said, Oh, I know the Messiah is coming. The one who is called Christ, when he comes, he will explain everything to us. Cause they're waiting on him too. Then Jesus said, I am he. I am the Messiah that you've been waiting for. What? He shared who he was to this woman, a Samaritan by herself at the well. They weren't even supposed to be talking. And she knew it. They didn't get educated, but Jesus was giving her a lesson in theology. She was curious. She was smart. She wanted to know. She was ready to hear. And she got so excited. She ran into town and told everyone about Jesus and what he had said to her. It says her testimony brought the town to Jesus. She was the first evangelist. She was preaching to everyone in the town. Now she won't just preach into the women of the town. Nope. The whole town got saved. I think that's just awesome I want to wrap this up With telling one other little story because this one was kind of funny okay, this is where jesus and the disciples are crossing through another area of samaria and The samaritan people wouldn't receive him in their town and james and john Were they the sons of thunder? They were sassy come on Well, you know what they said to Jesus when, when the people wouldn't let him in the town, Lord, do you want us to tell fire to come down from heaven and consume them? can we get a lightning bolt over here to consume? These people in a fiery furnace I mean, y'all, they were walking with Jesus. They were the first to be trained by the Jesus. And yet, gosh, they're so human. Just like us. Burn them sons of bitches up. How dare them not receive us? But you know what Jesus turned and rebuked them. And, they went on their way. I bet they felt stupid when Jesus turned and said, the whole time we've been together you and I this is the best you got it does kind of stand out That's the way the disciples handled it. And then the woman at the well who we know Had probably been ostracized and not cared for in her community was somehow able to reach out to them despite all that and share about Jesus. Isn't that cool? The entire town was converted that's cool. God just loves women. So let me just wrap this up by saying. in love to everyone who still thinks that women aren't called to preach Stop spreading that dumb dumb sauce on biscuits and calling it gravy The word is clear from the old testament to the new just listen To joel, too I will pour out my spirit on all flesh your sons and your daughters shall prophesy you guys Get yourself some of the spirit Let the Lord pour it out on you. I know he speaks to me in just these kind and generous ways and can redirect me in the kindest way. When, someone had treated me poorly and shunned me. I really wanted to call down fire to consume them, but instead the Lord just gave me a word about my mission. He told me that my words were powerful, prophetic, and needed. I put that as a reminder in my phone. Isn't that great? Because, you know, my delivery, y'all, my approach was not smooth. It was a lot like that Samaritan woman, a bit sassy. What do you mean you don't want me to preach? God uses and speaks to us in ways that we can receive, but also in just this gentle way that makes you feel like, ah, like you've taken a deep breath. That's how God makes you feel when he talks to you. So if you're hearing a bunch of stuff that's accusatory or makes you frightened or scared, that is not Jesus. That's somebody else. Okay. I love you. Have a great day. And I can't wait to get together again on Preaching Girl.
